New servers and expected service breaks

For the past months we’ve been busy building a new backend (servers and databases, that is) for Sports Tracker. As Sports Tracker has become more and more popular, our old servers just couldn’t handle the huge amount of users we have today. The new backend system will be taken into use today and tuned for optimal performance gradually during the upcoming weeks.

We will have a scheduled service break starting today, Tuesday 24th of September, at 11am CET/ 2am PT. The break is estimated to take 48 hours but we will keep you informed about the progress. We also expect to have a few short delays or service breaks during the upcoming weeks as we fine-tune the performance. It is also possible that momentarily the service will not show all your historical data, but don’t worry – all your workouts are safe.

What does then the new backend mean to you as a user? Basically it means the service will be more stable and faster. There are also many other technical improvements to the service. As many of you know, we’ve had to prioritize this work and many other projects have been postponed. Now that we’ll have the new backend in place, we can start the work on those projects. More news to follow!

Thanks for your patience and happy tracking!

    Hi,

better take your time and do it good. I’m also using it since my Nokia and now with Iphone. I now use Polar Beat in parallel and noticed that GPS seems to measure wrong in a certain section of my favorite racetrack. Curiosly enough Polar Beat is wron too, but Sports-Tracker is even more wrong… …very strange. It says that I need 2:20 min for 1 km. I’d be very happy, if this were true ;-)
Any ideas… …but once more: better take your time for the relaunch…

    regards
    Bert

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi Bert, if they both show a bit wrong, then I’d say it’s a problem with the gps signal. Maybe there’s a bad coverage in that area..

Finally, something new from ST team. :)
But I wonder, why did app for symbian have so many features compared to android app? By those features I mean,
-offline map(downloaded via PC, especially open street map),
-autosave(in case of app crash ST would recover crashed workout),
-export workouts(to kml, csv, gpx straight from the app).
It seem to me that symbian app have more features than android app, since symbian is dead that seems strange to me.

    1. SAV

When I saw the first Android ST app, I was disappointed of missing features. The Android version is a step back to Symbian ST. Unfortunatelly this is not changed by times…
      Online tracking feature missing too…

    2. roman

      -autosave – must have!

  8. Milos

    Hi,

Is it possible to show track in 3D, maybe in Gmaps or just model?

  9. Alain Schultz

    Hello,
Very good application and site that I use since 2010 (first Nokia, then android).
But, could the website exist in other languages ?
Thanks a lot for your work.
    Best regards.

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi Alain, thanks for being a loyal user! At the moment we don’t have resources to have the website in different languages, but let’s see in the future:).

  10. dracula77

    buena trabajo.

  11. Daniele

    hey,
I’ve been using ST on my Nokia E5 for about a month, mostly for cycling.
I love it and find it a perfect way to track my routes. in my experience I only had a problem: my phone probably has a old GPS module and sometimes the altitude reading (when I start a fast descent) is not good: for example, I get from 450 to 1200 mt. above sea level and when I get back to 450 the altimeter is still stuck at 1100-1000.
I use the GPS with these modes active: assisted, integrated, web – so it’s as fast as possible.
would it be possible to make the altimeter get its data from the maps and not from the GPS reading?
thanks for your kind attention :-)

  12. What about WP8 ?

What is the priority for the Win8 phones as you are putting next efforts to the new Android client. Win8 software has been too long in ‘coming soon’ queue, right. Should we stop waiting and look for other solutions. Not good !

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi, the Android app is already built, next it will released. More news on WP8 to follow.

      1. geoffpott

Isn’t that what “What about WP8” was asking and you reply with same comment they were complaining about clearly you have no idea when WP8 will be ready or if it will ever be available

  13. Christian G

Hi, is it possible to get the sum of altitude/decent in the mobile app?

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Yes that’s under consideration. Which phone do you have?

      1. Christian G

        I use the android os – sgs3

        1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi, I’ve asked it to be added to the app, hope we can do it in the near future.

  17. Loek

    Hoi Katja,

Just at the moment I want to order a heartrate belt for my sister you are down ;-)

Is the backend upgrade also functional for the release of the new apps? Can you post some teasers like screenshots of new functionality?

    Kind regards from the Netherlans,
    Loek

    1. Loek

Ahh, I see the shop is still available…
(As a schizofrenic I allways talk to myself and answer my own posts ;-)

    2. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Haha, lucky for us the store is up;). Next up is the new Android app but it won’t have any major new features. We built it from scratch to make it more stable. Then after that, new features starting to show up for sure.

      1. Hans

Hi, I really hope that one of those features will be an autosave option !!! If for any reason the phone crashes whilst tracking you’ll lose it unrecoverable!

  18. banasiak

      1. Anthony

Well, that’s easy for you to say.

  19. MikeJ

I use the App almost every day. I have not noticed issues with uploading to the website. It works as promised.
The one thing I run into is that after a GOOD run, I sometimes forget to turn it off and I track my drive home. I later try to use the clean feature to remove the spike, but it tells me that I am trying to delete too many data points, so I end up deleting the entire run. I know this is user error and not with the app itself. Just bringing it to your attention in case there is anything you can do to help a forgetful person like myself

    1. jmccabe

      Hi MikeJ

For the moment what I would suggest you do in those cases is look at the workout online and check what time you finished it. Then export the workout and save it locally. You can then edit the file (workout.gpx I think) in a text editor (e.g. notepad++ may be ok, or Emacs – it needs to be something that understands Unix format line endings so Notepad won’t do) and remove the bits from that point on. If you look in the file you’ll see a load of:

sections. All you need to do is remove those for the section when you were in the car making sure you only go as far as the just above (i.e. DO NOT REMOVE THE line). Save the modified file.

Then you can delete the original from the website and use the import facility to pull in the changed workout from the file.

      Hope this helps.
      John

      1. jmccabe

Aaarrggh – it’s got rid of the XML stuff!! Ah well..

Above should say: “If you look in the file you’ll see a load of (in this section, to avoid XML being removed, I’ve replace the “<" with ordinary brackets i.e. "(")

        (trkpt lat="xxx" lon="yyy")
        (other elements….)
        (/trkpt)
sections. All you need to do….. (as above)

Then "only go as far as the (/trkpt) just above (/trkseg) (i.e. DO NOT REMOVE THE (/trkseg) line). Save the modified file."…

        Hope this helps more :-)
        John

  20. Dario

    Finaly smart move …
Last few days was very difficult to sync workouts ( almoust impossible ).

Check http://www.strava.com and incorporate few program features from that applications ( segments, realtime tracking/comparing with friends .gpx file etc.)

And if it’s possible to make HTML 5 frontend instead of flash :-)

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi Dario, html5 website is on it’s way:). Other features to follow. Happy tracking!

      1. jmccabe

        Katja

Dario pointed to Strava and specifically mentioned real-time tracking. As I understand it, that’s a premium feature in Strava; are you considering moving to a business model that includes premium content in a similar way?

So far I haven’t paid for any premium features on other workout tracking sites, mainly because none of them appeal to me as much as Sports Tracker does (even if it wasn’t free) but I’d certainly be prepared to subscribe to Sports Tracker if it meant we could expect extra effort in new feature development.

        Hope this helps
        John

        1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi, let’s see what the future brings. But for sure, we’ll be adding new features now that we’ll get some of the crucial work behind us, one way or the other:).

  21. Milan

Good luck with your upgrade, count me among you fans! Speaking of new projects, I think many of us would greatly appreciate a voice feature telling us how many kilometres we have covered at what pace, say, after each kilometre. Thanks for your efforts!

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Thanks Milan! Which phone do you have?

  22. ZeeZ

    Finally, good job :-)
Uploading workouts via webpage was really difficult recent week / month :-(
    SEMIOFFTOPIC:
Do you plan any changes for the application as well. Like the workout autosave (every x minutes) feature ?

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Thanks for the support! Which app would you like to see the autosave added to?

      1. Bengt

I like to have that on Android Sports Tracker My Sony phones reboots with out any known reasons from time to time. With autosave we can start again after reboot or other problems. My Samsung S3 never do that. Keep up the good work!!!!

        1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

A new Android app is on it’s way as well, it’ll be much more stable, we built it from scratch. Autosave will be added as well, if not to the next version, then very soon after.

          1. ZeeZ

Cool. That was the app I was talking about :-)

Another nice feature would be .tcx (Garmin format) gps file upload. Thanks for your replies.

  23. Simon Balzan

I always used sportstracker and as from i upgraded to IOS 7 on my iphone, i have problems with GPS tracking and data recorded. Basically the route is plotted in a straight line.

Is this something from sports tracker or ios 7?

Can you help me out please?

    Simon Balzan

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi Simon, can you check which app version you have? It’s the first time I hear about this issue. Check also your location settings that they’re still enabled.

      1. Ove

For info: My wife also have problems after upgrade to iOS7.

        1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Could you check that she has the latest version of the app (1.8.15)? What kind of problems does she have?

          1. Matthijs

Hi guys, i have the same issue straight after upgrade to ios7

  24. juan

    1. van876

I’m getting well cheesed off with all the interruptions & service breaks, there always seems to be some problem. You don’t get it with Endomondo & Strava!

      1. vaidya

lot of times the gps connection goes off , the data goes haywire showing absurd speeds in between,
i feel runtastic is more stable

      2. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Well that’s why we’re getting the new backend. Sorry for the frustration we’re causing.

  25. Gaspar Matyas

    Hey ST Team,

It’s good to hear that you are developing and making efforts to keep your users satisfied! I am one those, who track daily with your app so it’s great news for me. Otherwise I’m really curious and looking forward what your new projects are! Hope there will be some interesting features to the app/website.
    Thanks for your hard work!
All the best wishes from Hungary!
    Matt

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Thanks Matt! We look forward to the future as well:)

  26. Ben Pereboom

    Hej Team,

Lots of success with migrating the old server to the new environment. From a professional perspective I know what challenges you nee to overcome ;-)

But after this 48 hours we as end user community can build up a complete new end user experience :-) Looking forward to it.

Again … a lot of success.

    Greetz,
    Ben

    1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi Ben, thanks so much for the support, we’ll need it for sure:)!

      1. Dimitri K

Same issue here with IOS7. Route Tracking is plotted in straight line. Version is 1.8.15.

        1. Katja/ team Sports Tracker

Hi, can’t seem to find the initial issue that you refer to, but please check you have enabled background app refresh: Settings/ General/ Background app refresh/ ON/ Sports Tracker ON
