Three great spots for winter sports

If you’re thinking of spending most of winter eating slightly more than you should, and more time than usual on the sofa, January can often seem pretty glib. However, we’ve pulled together some of the best places to go to keep in shape and get fit whilst embracing the festive season.

Zell Am See, Austria

Similar to hiking, Nordic walking is about exploring sparkling white wonderlands. It’s been developed from off-season ski training activity on the idea that whilst you’re walking you use special designed walking poles. Whilst you can do this at a number of places across Europe, we recommend Zell am See-Kaprun in Austria. There are numerous trails to choose from suited to all levels and the mountain landscape of Zell Am See is truly a delight.

Chamonix Vallée Blanche, France

This is one for all adrenaline junkies! If the idea of a 17-kilometre-long, 2,800-metre descent at 3,813 metres doesn’t send you running the other way then head to France. After the cable car ride up to the Aiguille du Midi, there’s the adrenaline boosting Arête to negotiate. If the thought of traversing a narrow, icy ridge with just a rope to hold onto precariously while trying to balance your skis or snowboard doesn’t terrify you, then this is one of the most perfect off-piste runs.

Algarve, Portugal

If you’re in search of some winter sun then the Algarve is for you. With a year round balmy climate and first class beaches, you can enjoy long walks around its array of picturesque towns and villages to explore the local culture – sure, not your standard ‘winter sport’ but let’s face it, aren’t long walks in the winter time the best too? Just watch out: the evening can get chilly so remember to take a jacket with your sunnies!
